Designing out Crime launches for 2010

The Sorrell Foundation’s Designing out Crime programme has expanded into five regions across the UK this year, following a successful pilot in 2008–2009. The pilot programme gave three groups of young people from London the opportunity to communicate their ideas about crime to the Home Secretary, and also to the 32 London Borough Metropolitan Police commanders. As a result of these young people’s findings, the Home Office, working in partnership with the Design and Technology Alliance Against Crime, asked the Foundation to work with groups from five regions across the UK.

Basildon, Bolton, Bradford, Merthyr Tydfil and Nottinghamshire are taking part in Designing out Crime 2009–2010. Each group of around 30 young people will work together to identify issues of crime in their areas, focusing on the school environment, the journey to and from school, and the community. The groups will travel to Somerset House in London for a challenge workshop in the new year, where they will undertake a mapping exercise to locate problem areas and visit inspirational spaces.

Each group will be working towards producing a visual brief, documenting the issues of crime they have identified. Their findings will be presented to local and national government decision-makers, and also to members of the UK design community, in May 2010.
