Let the masterclasses begin!

The first masterclass of the National Art & Design Saturday Club took place on 8 May at Plymouth College of Art & Design, led by Domenic Lippa, graphic designer and partner at global design firm Pentagram.

Domenic shared his passion for typography with the group of 25 students, before challenging them to create a typographic poster based on their favourite quote. The students, all of whom are aged between 14 and 16 and new to typography, then had one-to-one feedback sessions with Domenic. He also showed them some of the work he has produced during 25 years in the industry.

‘We had a really great morning masterclass with the students at Plymouth,’ Domenic said about the day. ‘I was amazed and inspired by their enthusiasm and ability – they all took the brief I set and created quite challenging solutions. I wanted them to produce something that was personal, and this was achieved with a passion that belied their ages. I hope they got as much out of it as I did.’

The series of masterclasses, which mark the final months of the successful National Art & Design Saturday Club, will continue with sessions from designers Simon Waterfall and Thomas Heatherwick, and artist Anthony Gormley, taking place at Cleveland College of Art & Design, Hereford College of Arts and Leeds College of Art respectively.

The young people who have taken part in the programme, which began in September 2009, will display the work that they have produced at Somerset House, London, in June.
