On 14 November 2009, over 100 young people who have joined the National Art & Design Saturday Club as founder members, travelled to London to celebrate its launch.
The club has been set up by the Sorrell Foundation, with support from the Audi Design Foundation, to inspire and engage young people through the resources available at colleges and universities of art and design. In the club’s pilot year, four art and design colleges are taking part: Cleveland College of Art & Design, Hereford College of Arts, Leeds College of Art and Plymouth College of Art.
For the launch, 112 young people travelled to Somerset House, London, bringing with them a self-portrait for display in the Sorrell Foundation Young Design Centre. After an introduction from Sir John Sorrell, who began his own career at Saturday design school, they each received a membership pack before heading out to explore inspirational spaces on London’s South Bank.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the young people visited the Tate Modern’s Pop Life exhibition and enjoyed a guided tour of the permanent collection. The day ended on the London Eye, which reopened just in time, after a particularly severe weather warning.
Art and design work created by the club members during 2009/2010 will be displayed in an exhibition at Somerset House in summer 2010. For more information, please see the National Art & Design Saturday Club page.
