The What’s Next for Schools? exhibition opened at the Sorrell Foundation Young Design Centre in May 2007. It draws attention to the benefits of giving young people a say in the way their new schools are designed, and showcases the outcomes of the joinedupdesignforschools programme, in which pupils are given the role and responsibility of clients on their school development projects.
The colourful exhibition was created in partnership with award-winning designers Casson Mann, and makes use of recycled school desks, which hold computer games, material samples and interactive media for visitors to explore. It is designed to engage everyone involved with schools, from nursery children to architects and grandparents.
The exhibition also highlights the government’s capital investment programme for schools, in which every secondary school and 50 per cent of primary school buildings in England will be rebuilt or refurbished, and hundreds of new academies will be created. The Sorrell Foundation believes that in order to make the most of this investment, it is vital to involve pupils as part of the overall client team in every school-build project.
The What’s Next for Schools? exhibition describes the common issues consistently identified by thousands of pupils in Sorrell Foundation workshops.
What’s Next for Schools? is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Somerset House, Embankment level. The nearest tube station is Temple. Entry is free. For school-party guided tours please contact jenny@thesorrellfoundation.com
